    Exploring Sleep Health Among Occupational Therapy Students

    A substantial number of health-professional graduate students do not follow the national recommendation of obtaining at least seven hours of sleep per day. Decreased sleep duration and quality are strongly associated with daytime sleepiness and dysfunction, academic burnout, low academic performance, and mental health symptoms and disorders. However, limited research exists on sleep health among occupational therapy (OT) graduate students. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore OT graduate student perspectives on sleep and to measure their sleep duration, quality, and practices to inform sleep promotion strategies for increased student well-being. A mixed-method study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Occupational therapy graduate student participants engaged in a focus group and completed the Sleep Practices and Attitudes Questionnaire (SPAQ) along with a survey of demographic characteristics. Nineteen participants completed all aspects of the study. Participants slept an average of 6.75 hours per weekday night and rated their sleep quality an average of 3.47 out of 5 on a Likert scale (1: restless; 5: restful). The majority of participants (68.4%; n=13) reported feeling unrefreshed upon waking, and 78.9% (n=15) reported tiredness during the day. Three major themes emerged from the focus group data: 1) sleep prioritization and practice, 2) sleep knowledge versus action, and 3) occupational balance. This study is one of the first to assess sleep health among OT graduate students. Findings contribute to sleep health literature and may guide programming in sleep health promotion and graduate student well-being

    High levels of stress among occupational therapy graduate students have led to the adoption of unhealthy coping habits such as poor nutrition, little exercise, and disrupted sleep. In response, many institutions have explored programming and even curricular changes to support student well-being. However, very few are built upon a strong theoretical foundation to address holistic well-being. Therefore, this paper describes how logic modeling was used to develop a student well-being program based on Facilitating Learning and Occupational Well-Being Using Research-Based Initiatives for Student Health (FLOURISH), a theoretical approach rooted in the Person-Environment-Occupation Performance Model. A well-being program delivered via a virtual community of practice for entry-level students at a Midwestern occupational therapy program was created to decrease stress and enhance overall well-being for the performance of learning. The program consisted of eight 50-minute sessions that met once per week and included topics of physical, mental, sociocultural, environmental, and occupational well-being. The student well-being program is one viable option that shows promise to empower students with a theoretical approach to address personal and professional well-being, which has the potential to translate into professional practice. In this article, we describe the well-being program and the theoretical approach in detail and illustrate how it can be used to improve occupational therapy student well-being

    Recruitment, growth and mortality of an Antarctic hexactinellid sponge, Anoxycalyx joubini.

    Polar ecosystems are sensitive to climate forcing, and we often lack baselines to evaluate changes. Here we report a nearly 50-year study in which a sudden shift in the population dynamics of an ecologically important, structure-forming hexactinellid sponge, Anoxycalyx joubini was observed. This is the largest Antarctic sponge, with individuals growing over two meters tall. In order to investigate life history characteristics of Antarctic marine invertebrates, artificial substrata were deployed at a number of sites in the southern portion of the Ross Sea between 1967 and 1975. Over a 22-year period, no growth or settlement was recorded for A. joubini on these substrata; however, in 2004 and 2010, A. joubini was observed to have settled and grown to large sizes on some but not all artificial substrata. This single settlement and growth event correlates with a region-wide shift in phytoplankton productivity driven by the calving of a massive iceberg. We also report almost complete mortality of large sponges followed over 40 years. Given our warming global climate, similar system-wide changes are expected in the future

    Evaluation of a Faculty Fellows Program in Science Communication

    Introduction: Science communication plays a crucial role in tackling pressing regional, national, and global health issues. Effective communication with various audiences is integral to dissemination of science findings. Purpose: This study evaluates changes in self-efficacy and attitudes toward science communication skills over time and also assesses program outcomes and satisfaction with a Faculty Fellows in Science Communication (FFSC) program among faculty (N = 30) with interest in environmental health science and/or education in Appalachia Kentucky. Methods: A mixed methods program evaluation was employed using longitudinal data on behaviors, attitudes, and program outcomes from three cohorts of Faculty Fellows who participated in the year-long UK-CARES Faculty Fellows in Science Communication (FFSC) program from 2018 to 2021. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance was used to evaluate changes over time in self-efficacy and attitude scores. Results: A total of 30 Fellows enrolled in the program. Participation in the FFSC program significantly increased self-efficacy in communicating with peers in one’s own department (F = 7.6, p = 0.002), outside department (F = 7.3, p = 0.002), and lay audiences (F = 5.8, p = 0.006) and evaluations of the program were positive. Qualitative feedback from participants offered insights into how program participation helped them communicate with different audiences, incorporate narratives or stories to engage audiences, and develop innovative methods of communicating with lay audiences. Implications: The FFSC program provides a useful framework for other institutions and supports faculty as they build the communication skills necessary to effectively translate science with various audiences

    Generation and analysis of a mouse intestinal metatranscriptome through Illumina based RNA-sequencing

    With the advent of high through-put sequencing (HTS), the emerging science of metagenomics is transforming our understanding of the relationships of microbial communities with their environments. While metagenomics aims to catalogue the genes present in a sample through assessing which genes are actively expressed, metatranscriptomics can provide a mechanistic understanding of community inter-relationships. To achieve these goals, several challenges need to be addressed from sample preparation to sequence processing, statistical analysis and functional annotation. Here we use an inbred non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse model in which germ-free animals were colonized with a defined mixture of eight commensal bacteria, to explore methods of RNA extraction and to develop a pipeline for the generation and analysis of metatranscriptomic data. Applying the Illumina HTS platform, we sequenced 12 NOD cecal samples prepared using multiple RNA-extraction protocols. The absence of a complete set of reference genomes necessitated a peptide-based search strategy. Up to 16% of sequence reads could be matched to a known bacterial gene. Phylogenetic analysis of the mapped ORFs revealed a distribution consistent with ribosomal RNA, the majority from Bacteroides or Clostridium species. To place these HTS data within a systems context, we mapped the relative abundance of corresponding Escherichia coli homologs onto metabolic and protein-protein interaction networks. These maps identified bacterial processes with components that were well-represented in the datasets. In summary this study highlights the potential of exploiting the economy of HTS platforms for metatranscriptomics
